Why Is Vitamin D Important For Bones?

Health Suppliments & Nutrition

When you think of bone and teeth health, calcium is the first thing that comes to mind. Understandable, because calcium is the main mineral needed for bone growth and strength.

However, there is another nutrient needed for good bone health and strength: vitamin D. Why is it important for bones?

Bone Growth and Development

Bones take an incredibly long journey to grow. They start forming in the womb, before a person is born. They don’t finish developing until after 25 years.

Calcium is the main mineral needed for the formation, growth, and repair of bones. It’s why growing kids are encouraged to eat calcium-rich foods such as eggs, tofu, leafy greens, milk, yogurt, and fortified juices and cereals.

The Importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is just as important as calcium. Without vitamin D, it doesn’t matter how much calcium you get. This is because the body won’t be able to absorb calcium without vitamin D.

A lot can happen to a person’s bones throughout 25 years. Sometimes they break or splinter. They elongate and thicken.

Teeth, too, change during the years. Baby or milk teeth fall out to make way for adult or permanent teeth.

All these changes with the bones and teeth will require calcium. And if calcium is required, so is vitamin D.

Bone Health Without Vitamin D

Without enough vitamin D and calcium, bones lose their density and toughness with age. This can lead to several bone-related problems, such as osteoporosis and osteomalacia.

Osteoporosis is the condition where bone mass is reduced. The body needs calcium from time to time, because calcium plays a role in blood pressure regulation. When the body needs calcium, it takes some from the calcium stored in bones. If the body has enough vitamin D and calcium supplementation, this wouldn’t be a problem. The body can just store calcium again.

Without vitamin D, however, the body can’t absorb calcium. The calcium stores in the bones will continue to get depleted, resulting to shrunken, brittle bones.

Osteomalacia is the condition where the bones are softened because of insufficient calcium and vitamin D. People with this condition are prone to bone fractures and breaks.

Osteomalacia is the term for the condition if presented in an adult. In children, it’s known as rickets.

When Should You Start Taking Vitamin D Supplements?

As early as you can, especially if you can’t get natural vitamin D from sun exposure or whole foods. Because bones continue to form and grow until 25, it’s important to supply your body with enough vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus that it needs.

Vitamin D absorption also gets harder as you get older. It’s advisable to start taking supplements early on so your bones won’t suffer with osteoporosis or osteomalacia when you reach your senior years.

There are many good vitamin D supplements to choose from. Just look for a brand with only vitamin D (and a carrier oil as vitamin D needs oil for absorption). Many choose to take vitamin D drops as liquid vitamin D is easier for young and old alike to take.

Can You Take Folic Acid If You Have Mthfr?

Health Suppliments & Nutrition

The body is made up of complex organ systems. Everything that you put inside it is being processed, absorbed, and sometimes excreted. Food is the fuel of the body. Food gives vitamins and minerals needed to function well. The body can also make some of its own vitamins and minerals when needed.

But, these essential vitamins have to undergo specific conversions to be usable. Let us look at folic acid, for example.

Folic acid is the metabolically inactive form of folate or vitamin B9. Humans are dependent on dietary sources for their folate supply. Pharmaceutically manufactured folic acid supplements are also a great source of this vitamin. Fortified food like bread and cereal are also good sources.

Folic acid plays an important role in proper brain functioning. It aids in the production of the genetic material (DNA and RNA) and also supports the growth and development of cells and tissues in the body. On top of that, folic acid also helps in making red blood cells that transport oxygen throughout the body.

Dozens of studies have also shown that folic acid aids in mental health. Its active form helps in the production of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin – the happy hormone.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women need higher levels of folic acid in their system. Folate is crucial in fetal development. It prevents the baby from having birth defects like neural tube defect, cleft palate, and spina bifida. Taking folic acid supplements before conception also lowers the risk of miscarriages and preterm birth.

Varieties of folate-rich food are as follows: green leafy vegetables, seafood, liver, peanuts, legumes and whole grain.

But, folic acid is an inactive form of folate. An enzyme needs to convert it first to its active form so that our body can absorb it. That enzyme is called the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase or MTHFR. The MTHFR converts folic acid into L-methylfolate. L-methylfolate is the active form of folate. It can now be absorbed by the body, bringing it into the blood circulation. The blood will then transport it to the organs that need it.

The MTHFR enzyme is not only important in the folate cycle, it is also crucial in several methylation cycles in the body. Methylation processes are important in the regeneration and regulation of cells in the body.

Folate deficiency can be caused by alcoholism, malnutrition, and genetic variation.

Some people have genetic conditions wherein they lack or are deficient in the MTHFR enzyme. Thus, these people will not be able to convert folic acid into its usable form. Doctors will prescribe them an alternative dietary supplement called methylfolate or active folate to provide their folate needs.

Healthy people can take folic acid as long as they have the MTHFR enzyme in their bodies.

Discussion of health conditions with your health care provider is important to address several health issues. It is crucial to consider everything when it comes to your health.

The Potential Impact Of Social Media On Your Workers’ Comp Or Disability Claim

Medical Legal

In today’s world, social media is a daily part of the lives of millions of people. Whether posting on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, many people think nothing of posting various photos and updates about what they doing at that particular moment. However, for those people who may be involved in workers’ compensation or disability claims, what are thought to be innocent posts and photos could actually do significant harm to their claims. Since an employer can deny workers’ compensation based on a number of factors, it is crucial those who submit claims make all the right decisions while the process plays out. One of the best ways to do so is by hiring the services of a skilled workers compensation attorney, who can then guide them through the process.

How Social Media Posts Can be Used Against You

Surprisingly to many people, social media posts can be used against them by employers and insurance companies in numerous ways, including:

  • Finding posts suggesting injuries were caused by other activities
  • Injuries happened earlier or later than originally claimed
  • Finding photos or posts showing person is capable of working despite their claims

When many people take to social media sites to post photos or status updates, they fail to consider who may in fact be looking at their sites. While it may often just be their family and friends, those who are currently involved in workers’ compensation or disability claims can almost always be sure their employer, insurance companies, and possibly even private investigators are also scanning their sites to see what is being posted.

What are They Looking For on Social Media Sites?

When employers, insurance companies, and private investigators are looking at social media sites, they are seeking to find certain types of evidence. For example, they will look for status updates or photos that may indicate you are lying about or exaggerating the seriousness of your injuries. In other situations, they may be able to find information you have posted about your medical condition, such as discussing medical appointments online, to find out what doctors are saying about your condition.

What Can Happen to My Claim?

Should evidence of this nature be discovered, various things can happen. For example, your benefits may be stopped while your case is investigated. However, in a worst-case scenario, you may find yourself facing fraud charges and other criminal charges as well. Rather than let this happen, always rely on the advice of an experienced workers compensation lawyer during your claims process.

Avoiding Mistakes

To lessen the chances mistakes of this nature will be made, it is always best to take the advice of your workers compensation attorney and stay off social media as much as possible until your claim is resolved. Even the slightest mistake, such as posting the wrong photo or talking about what you think is an innocent subject, may in fact start the downfall of your claim. Therefore, always work closely with a knowledgeable workers compensation attorney from start to finish.

The Amazing Benefits Of Using Iv Therapy For Athletic Recovery

Health Suppliments & Nutrition

In recent years there has been a lot of buzz about the benefits of IV therapy, especially for those that participate in athletics of all kinds. Athletes are known to have higher dietary needs due to their high level of physical activity and caloric burn rate. In many cases it can be hard to keep up with the
fluids and nutrition that they need. Here are just a few of the reasons that you may want to give IV therapy a try for yourself if you are an athlete.

Those that participate in activities that are high in intensity, duration or both actually cause stress to their metabolic system. This makes it more difficult for the body to absorb the nutrients that the individual consumes.

Only recently has this become increasingly clear by doing extensive studies on the nutritional levels of extreme athletes. By using infusions of nutrients, you are supplying your body with the nutrition that it needs while
circumventing the digestive process, which in even the average person leads to a great deal of waste.

Additionally, someone that does high level exercise has a much higher need for a wide range of nutrients in order to perform optimally. This is not a means to cheat as some might believe, but simply giving the body what it actually needs.

There are limits to how frequently professional athletes can get this type of therapy, but in general they do not break any regulations implemented by governing authorities. To be sure you within the rules you should consult the rules with the doctor you select to administer your treatments.

A major problem that most athletes face is trying to determine what a balanced diet would even look like for them that also allows them to maintain their weight. Due to the high number of calories burnt during exercise, they have a much higher need for carbs than the average individual.

Additionally, due to the high use of their muscles, there is a high need for increased protein to maintain strength and prevent injury. After worrying about fulfilling the calorie and protein needs it remains to be asked what is the right combination of fruits, vegetables and dairy?

Even the most experienced nutritionist will admit that even with all of the studies that have been done, there is no definitive answer to this question. Everyone has different needs and the body flushes out the majority of nutrients we consume that they do not immediately need.

This is where IV therapy comes into play. It gives the body the primary nutrition that science knows most people are lacking in a fashion that goes directly into the bloodstream for the body to use. It almost guarantees that your body will have everything it needs to perform at its highest capacity.

IV therapy is really a perfect option for athletes that find that they do not feel like they are getting the most from their diet. Of course, it is best to continue to eat a healthy balanced diet, but this is a great way to be sure that you are getting what your body needs in order to perform at as high level!

Herbs & Hypnosis Help To Relieve Anxiety & Insomnia

General

Herbs rank highly amongst natural anxiety remedies; most particularly the passion flower, which is recognized worldwide as a major aid in relieving stress and anxiety. Romania has even produced a chewing gum with passionflower which they recommend to help relaxation in people suffering from anxiety. Passion flower can be taken in a number of ways; the juice as a drink, or the dried plant boiled as an infusion for drinking, or tinctures and capsules can be bought over the counter at health stores and pharmacies. Another very popular herb in the relief of stress and anxiety is St John’s Wort which was even recommended by Hippocrates; the father of medicine, and is recognized as being as useful, or even more so, as pharmaceutical solutions for anxiety. Lavender is known for its calming effect in many cases of anxiety, stress and insomnia; lavender essential oil is often sprinkled on a pillow to aid restful sleep.

Anxiety Can Lead to Insomnia

Anxiety can often lead to insomnia and there are many herbs which not only serve as natural anxiety remedies, but also aid restful sleep. One such herb is Valerian which is a natural relaxant offering relief from anxiety, stress, and insomnia; either as an infusion or in capsule form. Valerian mixed with St John’s Wort make a powerful sleeping aid, as St John’s Wort is yet another herb which is useful in battling stress and insomnia. Raw licorice root contains a natural hormone that is nature’s alternative to cortisone and plays a large part in calming anxiety; making it particularly helpful in smokers who are trying to quit. Licorice root can be ground and added to food and juices, or used as an infusion. Lavender not only helps in times of stress, but also contains natural antibacterial properties which make it helpful as a natural remedy to many different complaints; nervousness, insomnia, hormonal imbalance etc. Click here for more details on insomnia hypnotherapy treatment.

What to Avoid with Anxiety

It is important to know what to avoid when you suffer from anxiety, as well as finding some natural anxiety remedies rather than pharmaceutical aids. You should definitely avoid alcohol and any kind of drugs, as they will decrease levels of minerals and vitamins in your system, at a time when these are very important to you. Foods to be avoided are sugar and sweetened products, carbohydrates, and caffeine in any form. As you avoid sugar; low blood sugar can bring on bouts of anxiety and even panic attacks, so it’s important to keep up natural blood sugar levels by eating fresh fruit and then follow this with a food that combines proteins with good fats and carbs to help sustain these levels. When anxiety leads to panic attacks, it is probably best to consult a medical professional, but you still have the choice of taking prescribed medication or sticking to natural remedies.

Natural Ways to Treat Anxiety

There are many natural ways to treat anxiety, for those who prefer not to take pharmaceutical medications. These natural anxiety remedies can include a number of relaxing herbs like Passionflower, Valerian, Lavender, and St John’s Wort; which can be taken as an infusion or in capsule form; or essential oils can be used in aromatherapy treatments. Relaxing exercises, especially long walks in the fresh air, are excellent remedies to stress and anxiety and yoga can help immensely in these situations. The fast pace of life today is responsible for the increase in people suffering from high levels of anxiety and stress, as people often forget that leisure time is every bit as important as the time spent at work; so that taking the time to take a long walk in the park, or to sit in the fresh air and read a book, will go a long way to reducing stress levels.

Relaxing Downtime Helps to Avoid Anxiety

People who suffer with anxiety usually face high levels of stress in the workplace and then take their work home with them so that they do not get any relaxing downtime; which is important in keeping stress levels down. Prescription drugs and even natural anxiety remedies like herbal infusions; may help to relieve stress but it is more important to avoid stress in the first place. Spending your leisure time on a computer or looking for answers to problems is not the way to relax and your time is better spent taking a walk in the fresh air; which will relax you and make you more efficient when you return to work. Fresh air is particularly good for the brain, but even indoor exercises like yoga can be singularly beneficial in times of stress; anything which takes your mind off work and other problems, is a perfect counterbalance to these stressful situations.

Rehab for depressed teens

Rehab

They are caught in between being a child and being an adult. They feel misunderstood and they want to be loved and accepted. Being a teenager is fun but it is not easy. There are those who enjoy their teenage years and there are those who simply develop feelings of depression.

There are multiple reasons why a teenager might become depressed. For example, teens can develop feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy over their grades. School performance, social status with peers, sexual orientation, or family life can each have a major effect on how a teen feels. Sometimes, teen depression may result from environmental stress. But whatever the cause, when friends or family — or things that the teen usually enjoys — don’t help to improve his or her sadness or sense of isolation, there’s a good chance that he or she has teen depression.

Sourced from: http://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/teen-depression#1

Once family members have identified that there teen is struggling with depression and maybe is involved with substance abuse the next step is enrolling them in a rehab program. They should ensure that the teen is enrolled in an adolescent specific rehab facility. This offers a lot of benefits.

Adolescent-specific rehab is designed specifically to help teens address substance abuse through a treatment program that not only provides medical drug detox and counseling, but also helps to build teens’ self-esteem and confidence. 30-day, 60-day or 90-day inpatient rehab programs in particular are very beneficial for teens who need a safe, structured environment.

Even after medical detox is successfully completed, teens who participate in adolescent-specific rehab will continue to benefit from programs that help boost their confidence through challenge activities like rope courses or outdoor adventures.

Additionally, adolescent-specific programs may also offer fully-accredited academic programs, which are beneficial to teens that may have fallen behind in school or need additional academic help to succeed.

Adolescent-specific rehab programs help teens to not only heal their bodies, but also their minds and spirits, and to better understand that sobriety is part of a happier and healthier long-term lifestyle.

Doctors have to run a number of tests when diagnosing depression and when everything is ruled out then they can be certain. This is because teens can get sad over anything hence the need to rule out everything else. It is important to seek immediate treatment when you suspect that depression is taking over.

The Importance of Seeking Treatment

Teens with severe cases of depression are at increased risk of suicide. According to Mental Health America, almost 500,000 people between the ages of 15 and 24 kill themselves every year. Some of these people harbored mental illness for years, and one small event triggered them to take drastic action. Teens at high risk of suicide may need close monitoring by a trained and qualified staff. It can be too difficult for families to provide this level of supervision at home, but in a clinical facility, the teen can receive this sort of care and might be prevented from making a terrible mistake. If your teen is at risk of suicide, enrolling the teen in a facility like ours could be the best thing you’ll ever do. At Newport Academy, we can work to help your teen and ensure that the teen doesn’t make this tragic choice.

The Role of Medications

Most people are accustomed to the idea of taking medications to ease the symptoms of mental illness. In a way, this is perfectly reasonable, as many mental illnesses are caused by chemical imbalances that can be corrected through the use of medications. The way forward with teens and medications for depression is slightly less clear.

For example, adults who face a major episode of depression are often given a standard antidepressant. Slowly, the medication builds up in the adult’s system and the symptoms of depression begin to lessen and ease. In adolescents, these medications aren’t always as effective. For example, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology found that use of antidepressants in teens is only mildly effective. It’s possible that the chemistry in an adolescent’s body just doesn’t respond well to the medications commonly used to treat adult depression.

Psychological issues that Teens Battle with

Psychological

Teenagehood is the time when young adults develop their personalities and attract the opposite sex. A small defect in their appearance can be devastating. Acne, which is predominant in teenagers, can cause serious social and psychological effects. There is a strong connection between attractiveness, physical appearance and peer status. Acne can crash the self-esteem of a teenager and lead to other adverse psychological traumas.

Acne can have profound social and psychological effects. These are not necessarily related to its clinical severity. Even mild acne can be significantly disabling. Acne can affect people of all ages but it predominantly occurs during the teenage years. Approximately 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 25 develop acne.

The psychological and social impacts of acne are a huge concern, especially because acne affects adolescents at a crucial period when they are developing their personalities. During this time, peer acceptance is very important to the teenager and unfortunately it has been found that there are strong links between physical appearance and attractiveness and peer status.

The mental health condition of a parent coupled with the parent’s behavior and familial relationships may impact psychological risks to a child. The level of risk posed will depend on the onset age, the intensity and duration of the mental illness as well as extent to which the symptoms affect positive parenting.

What impact does a parent’s mental illness have on children?

The effect of a parent’s mental illness on children is varied and unpredictable.[1] Although parental mental illness poses biological, psychosocial and environmental risks for children, not all children will be negatively affected, or affected in the same way. The fact that a parent has mental illness alone is not sufficient to cause problems for the child and family. Rather, it is how the mental health condition affects the parent’s behavior as well as familial relationships that may cause risk to a child. The age of onset, severity and duration of the parent’s mental illness, the degree of stress in the family resulting from the illness, and most importantly, the extent to which parents’ symptoms interfere with positive parenting, such as their ability to show interest in their children, will determine the level of risk to a child. The child’s age and stage of development is also important.

Eating disorders may be caused by biological, social and behavioral factors. The society favors bodies with a certain shape or size. Young people who want to acquire those bodies deny themselves food and in the long run cause more harm to their bodies and mind. Distress, fear of becoming overweight and low self-esteem among others are some of the reasons teens suffer from eating disorders.

Doctors aren’t certain what cause eating disorders. They suspect a combination of biological, behavioral, and social factors. For instance, young people may be influenced by cultural images that favor bodies too underweight to be healthy. Also, many children and teens with eating disorders struggle with one or more of the following problems:

fear-615989_640

Distress

Fear of becoming overweight
Feelings of helplessness
Low self-esteem

To cope with these issues, children and teens may adopt harmful eating habits. In fact, eating disorders often go hand-in-hand with other psychiatric problems such as the following:

Anxiety disorders
Depression
Substance abuse

Choosing the Best DUI Lawyer

General
[youtube video=https://youtu.be/9pRLlLGyhSY ]

Many vehicular accidents are attributed to drunk driving or driving under the influence of either alcohol or mind-altering substances. What many fail to recognize is that the implications are not only legal but can extend well into the social and economic aspects of all parties concerned. It is for this reason that if you are on the receiving end of a DUI charge, it is imperative that you be represented by a lawyer who has extensive knowledge of DUI laws.

Choosing the right DUI lawyer for you may not be all that difficult. However, it often involves a lot of researching on the credibility and trustworthiness of the lawyer or law firm to represent your case. It is important to hire not just any lawyer but someone who has an excellent background in vehicular laws and more importantly on existing DUI laws for any given state or jurisdiction. Even if you already have a personal lawyer in New York but got arrested for drunk driving in Florida, this does not necessarily guarantee that your personal lawyer is well equipped with the legal knowledge of Florida DUI laws. It goes without saying that the DUI lawyer should be well-versed with all the legal requirements for a DUI charge in a particular jurisdiction.

On the same note, it is imperative to hire a lawyer that specializes in DUI cases. He may be excellent in divorce cases as well as murder and homicide. But, if the lawyer simply does not have the years of experience handling DUI cases, then it is best to look for another. AGHA are well experienced in the complex legal proceedings of DUI so, hiring them will be a big relief for your case.

Dealing with Alcoholism

Addictions

Alcoholism is a dangerous disease that most sufferers need help to recover from. There are several signs and symptoms that reveal that a person has become dependent on alcohol.

Physical signs of alcohol overconsumption and intoxication are recognizable by most adults:

  • Slurred or incoherent speech
  • Poor balance and clumsiness
  • Delayed reflexes
  • Stomach pains, vomiting or nausea
  • Loss of consciousness or blacking-out
  • Redness of the face during or after periods of consumption

It is possible for a person to reach a level of intoxication that becomes life-threatening (alcohol poisoning). The respiratory system becomes depressed, and the person will stop breathing.

There is a difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse. Abusers can have a limit while alcoholics break all the rules.

Signs of alcohol abuse

man-1072481_1920

Substance abuse experts make a distinction between alcohol abuse and alcoholism (also called alcohol dependence). Unlike alcoholics, alcohol abusers have some ability to set limits on their drinking. However, their alcohol use is still self-destructive and dangerous to themselves or others.

Repeatedly neglecting your responsibilities at home, work, or school because of your drinking. For example, performing poorly at work, flunking classes, neglecting your kids, or skipping out on commitments because you’re hung over.

Using alcohol in situations where it’s physically dangerous, such as drinking and driving, operating machinery while intoxicated, or mixing alcohol with prescription medication against doctor’s orders.

Experiencing repeated legal problems on account of your drinking. For example, getting arrested for driving under the influence or for drunk and disorderly conduct.

Sourced from:http://www.helpguide.org/articles/addiction/alcoholism-and-alcohol-abuse.htm

Not all alcohol abusers eventually end up being alcoholics but abuse of alcohol is a risk factor. At times alcoholism comes as a response to changes that are stressful to handle for instance divorce or death of a loved one.

Signs of alcohol dependence or addiction

  • You cannot quit drinking or control how much you drink.
  • You need to drink more to get the same effect.
  • You have withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking. These include feeling sick to your stomach, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety.
  • You spend a lot of time drinking and recovering.
  • You have given up other activities so you can drink.
  • You keep drinking even though it harms your relationships and causes health problems.
